چکیده

We study the applicability of the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) variational framework for thin-body problems in structural mechanics. Our numerical approach is based on discontinuous piecewise polynomial finite element spaces for the trial functions and approximate, local computation of the corresponding ‘optimal’ test functions. In the Timoshenko beam problem, the proposed method is shown to provide the best approximation in an energy-type norm which is equivalent to the L2-norm for all the unknowns, uniformly with respect to the thickness parameter. The same formulation remains valid also for the asymptotic Euler-Bernoulli solution. As another onedimensional model problem we consider the modelling of the so called basic edge effect in shell deformations. In particular, we derive a special norm for the test space which leads to a robust method in terms of the shell thickness. Finally, we demonstrate how a posteriori error estimator arising directly from the discontinuous variational framework can be utilized to generate an optimal hp-mesh for resolving the boundary layer. A Hybrid Petrov-Galerkin Method for Optimal Output Prediction

We present a new Boundary Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (BDPG) method for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The method represents a modification of the standard Hybrid Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) scheme, and uses locally-computed optimal test functions to achieve enhanced accuracy along the domain boundaries. This leads to improved accuracy in relevant boundary outputs such as li...

A hybridized discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin scheme for scalar conservation laws

We present a hybridized discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin (HDPG) method for the numerical solution of steady and time-dependent scalar conservation laws. The method combines a hybridization technique with a local Petrov–Galerkin approach in which the test functions are computed to maximize the inf-sup condition. Since the Petrov–Galerkin approach does not guarantee a conservative solution, we propo...

A Class of Discontinuous Petrov-galerkin Methods. Part Ii: Optimal Test Functions

We lay out a program for constructing discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) schemes having test function spaces that are automatically computable to guarantee stability. Given a trial space, a DPG discretization using its optimal test space counterpart inherits stability from the well-posedness of the undiscretized problem. Although the question of stable test space choice had attracted the atten...

A Class of Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin Methods. Part IV: Wave Propagation

The phase error, or the pollution effect in the finite element solution of wave propagation problems, is a well known phenomenon that must be confronted when solving problems in the high-frequency range. This paper presents a new method with no phase errors for onedimensional time-harmonic wave propagation problems. The method is constructed within the framework of the Discontinuous Petrov-Gale...

Existence of solution and solving the integro-differential equations system by the multi-wavelet Petrov-Galerkin method

‎In this paper, we discuss about existence of solution for integro-differential system and then we solve it  by using the Petrov-Galerkin method. In the Petrov-Galerkin method choosing the trial and test space is important, so we use Alpert multi-wavelet as basis functions for these spaces. Orthonormality is one of the properties of Alpert multi-wavelet which helps us to reduce computations in ...
